PUTRAJAYA: Foreign Minister, Datuk Seri Dr. Zambry Abdul Kadir made his first official visit to Jakarta, Indonesia after being appointed to the position on December 2.

According to a statement from Wisma Putra here, in a visit starting today until next Friday, he will pay a courtesy call on the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo at Istana Merdeka, in addition to meeting his counterpart, Retno LP Marsudi.

This is his second meeting with the Foreign Minister of the republic after meeting during the ASEAN-European Union Commemorative Summit in Belgium on December 13.

The official visit said the statement also reflects the close and comprehensive relationship between Malaysia and Indonesia as the two closest neighboring countries.

It also provides an opportunity to assess the progress of bilateral cooperation, explore new potential and discuss various joint efforts to address global challenges.

Zambry is also scheduled to deliver a lecture on the issue of strengthening relations between the two countries to students at Universiti Bina Nusantara, Jakarta.

“He will also hold an engagement session with Indonesian and Malaysian Business Organizations, Indonesian youth leadership and meet the Malaysian diaspora,” explained Wisma Putra.

Throughout the past year, Indonesia was Malaysia’s seventh largest trading partner and the third largest at the ASEAN level with a trade value of RM95.31 billion.

For this year as of the end of last October, the total trade reached RM110.44 billion, an increase of 47.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

The close relationship with Indonesia also saw the embassy complex in Jakarta which was opened in 1993 as Malaysia’s largest diplomatic mission office abroad.

Located in an area of ​​more than two hectares, it also contains a total of 13 Malaysian agencies in addition to housing the Permanent Representative Office of Malaysia to ASEAN.
