Yasin failed to investigate drug charges, representation was rejected


PETALING JAYA: Singer and composer Yasin Sulaiman failed in his application to review three drug-related charges after the Attorney General’s Office (AGC) rejected his representation.

Accordingly, the Sessions Court here today set the case to be mentioned on February 20.

With that development, Yasin remains on trial for 15 days starting March, which is on March 6 to 10, 13 to 17 and 20 to 24, while 10 prosecution witnesses will be called to testify.

When met by media representatives after the proceedings, Yasin expressed sadness and aggrievedness with the decision of the representation but will continue to fight in court to face the charges.

“The first representation was rejected, there may be a technical problem, but I will write for the second representation myself,” he explained.

During the proceedings before Judge Nik Nasimah Nik Mohammad, Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohd. Asnawi Abu Hanipah informed that the representation was rejected but the official letter regarding the matter has not yet been issued.

“I believe the next hearing date is on March 6,” he said when informing the decision of the representation.

Ariff Azami Hussein’s lawyer, when confirming the decision of the representation, informed that the defense has not received information regarding the matter.

“We have not received any notice in writing or email, but we have received the latest instructions from the client to enter the second representation no later than two weeks from today’s date,” said the lawyer.

In the previous proceedings, the defense informed that the representation involved relatively comprehensive medical documents to apply for the charges to be reviewed.

The 47-page representation also contains the treatment he needs, humanitarian reasons, appeals involving the family and Yasin’s current condition.

On July 6 last year, Yasin or his real name Muhammad Yasin Sulaiman, 48, was lucky when he did not face the death penalty for trafficking 214 grams of cannabis.

The matter follows the prosecution’s announcement that the charge of trafficking was withdrawn and Yasin was charged with a new charge of possessing drugs weighing 193.7 grams.

According to the new charge, Yasin was found in possession of a dangerous drug of Cannabis weighing 193.7 grams at a condominium in Persiaran Surian Damansara Indah Resort Home, PJU 3, Kota Damansara here at 5.30 pm on 24 March 2022.

For the offence, Yasin was charged under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and can be punished under Section 39A(2) of the same act.

The section provides for imprisonment for life or not less than five years and can also be punished with whipping of not less than 10 lashes if convicted.

Meanwhile, Yasin was also charged with planting 17 plants in plastic pots filled with soil from which Cannabis was obtained directly or indirectly at the same place, time and date.

The charge is according to Section 6B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which can be punished under Section 6B(3) of the same act of the Penal Code which provides for life imprisonment and whipping not less than six times if convicted.

Yasin was also charged with giving himself the dangerous drug ’11-nor-delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol-9-carboxylic acid’ at the Petaling Jaya District Headquarters Narcotics Office (IPD), at 11.05pm on the same date.

The charge is brought under Section 15 (1)(a) of the act and can be punished under Section 15 (1) of the same act, which carries a fine of not more than RM5,000 or a maximum imprisonment of two years. – MESSENGER
