PETALING JAYA: People’s focus is now on the formation of the Federal Government following the results of the 15th General Election (GE15) which saw no party succeed in obtaining a simple majority of 112 parliamentary seats.
Based on the official results of the Election Commission (SPR), Pakatan Harapan (PH) won 82 seats while Perikatan Nasional (PN) won 73, Barisan Nasional (BN) 30 seats, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (22), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (six), Parti Warisan Sabah (three), Parti Keseteratan Malaysia Demokratik (KDM) (one), Parti Bangsa Malaysia (one) and Bebas (two).
So, in addition to GPS and GRS, BN is the main determinant to secure a simple majority to form the Central government.
Therefore, UMNO held a meeting of the Political Bureau and Supreme Council (MT) today to determine the political direction of Barisan Nasional (BN) whether to continue as the opposition or become a government with PN or PH.
However, the strength of Warisan, KDM, PBM and Bebas should not be underestimated because support is essential whether PH or PH to create a stable government.
Based on the first formula which is the total of 131 which is PN+BN+GRS+GPS i.e. PN (73 seats) mixed with 22 from Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) (six) and BN (30 seats), then it is enough to form federal government.
The second formula is 119 between PH and BN to form a government.
If the negotiation of a coalition of political parties to win at least 112 seats is successful, the parties that agree to merge will decide on an agreed name to be presented to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as the candidate for Prime Minister.
Therefore, indirectly it may be between the Chairman of PH, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim or the Chairman of PN, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin who will be the candidate for Prime Minister if His Majesty approves.
Everything is subject to the approval of the Agong where the appointment of the Prime Minister is at the absolute discretion of His Majesty. – MESSENGER
