KUALA TERENGGANU: A university student here claimed to have almost become a victim of cyber crime when he was offered a fake scholarship of RM4,000 through the Telegram application, recently.
Kong Hui Yuan, 21, said the incident happened when he saw a scholarship offer by an individual using the name ‘Dr. Sahira’ before she applied through the same application.
According to him, the application was then approved by ‘Dr. Sahira’ after she provided personal information such as a copy of her identity card, bank account number and passport photo.
“The individual involved is active in many Telegram groups consisting of thousands of university students across the country.
“After the application was approved, I was asked to pay RM200 as a deposit for the RM4,000 scholarship, in addition to being promised a laptop by the individual involved.
“Suspicious of the RM200 charge, I searched on social media and found a post uploaded by Dr. The real Sahira by explaining her name was stolen by the party not
“I then made a police report on December 23 because I was worried that my identity would also be used for illegal purposes,” he said when met here today.
Hui Yuan said, he then spread the fraud of the syndicate involved in the Telegram group, but that action caused him to be threatened by the individual.
He said that many friends at the university were believed to have been tricked to the point of being cheated after paying between RM150 and RM200 as requested but not receiving the promised scholarship.
“Despite realizing his fraud had been detected, the individual continued to promote the fake scholarship offer using another name while continuing to threaten me.
