PETALING JAYA: United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) appointed Professor Dr. Zilfalil Alwi from the Human Genome Center, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) as chairman in the field of human genetics from 2022 to 2026.

The university, through a post on Facebook, congratulated Zilfalil on his appointment.
The appointment is also said to be chairman first in human genetics awarded by UNESCO, where the project led by Zilfalil will focus on human genetics with special reference to thalassemia.
The UNESCO Chair was established in 1992 with the objective of encouraging collaboration and international networking between all universities to increase institutional capacity through sharing, knowledge, collaboration, culture and communication.
In fact, until now UNESCO has appointed more than 900 chairmen from more than 950 institutions in 117 countries.
Meanwhile, Zilfalil, who was contacted, said that he greatly appreciated the appointment and described it as an appreciation of local ability and expertise.
“This is proof that Unesco appreciates our expertise and I will be involved in research and education because this is UNESCO’s field,” he said.
UNESCO is an agency under the United Nations headquartered in Paris, France.
He said, among the important areas of research on human genetics is the study of thalassemia.
With the appointment, he is now the UNESCO Chair Holder of Thalassemia Human Genetics. -messenger
