UMNO risks ordering the ‘death’ of PH-DAP cooperation

PUTRAJAYA: UMNO is risking death for the party’s political survival if it decides to cooperate with Pakatan Harapan (PH) and DAP by establishing a unity government.

Senior Lecturer at the Media and Information War Center of Mara University of Technology (UiTM), Dr. Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin said that the cooperation will certainly have an impact on the image of UMNO as a party that fights for independence and at the same time clearly fights for the Malay Muslim agenda in this country.

He said that the promises made by UMNO leaders not to cooperate with PH-DAP will certainly raise doubts and remove the confidence of the voting community because the promises were used to gain votes during the last General Election (GE).

“This is of course a long term for UMNO to restore the image of the party due to the formation of governments in Perak and Pahang and other possibilities that will happen after this.

“It is at once a great blow to UMNO and a party that specifically fights for the political interests of Muslim Malays,” he said in a statement today.

Noor Nirwandy said, it is difficult to see UMNO restoring the sentiments floating around on social media and among the party’s supporters if the party’s cooperation takes place at the Federal level.

In fact, it is becoming increasingly difficult for UMNO to restore its image as the main core party to promote the Malay Muslim community in the country.

Thus, he said, it is not impossible that the public will turn their attention to other parties that have the same core as UMNO and it is likely that other parties will start to become dominant in the national political arena based on the same core.

This is because, he said, the community still sees the dominance of Malay-Muslim politics in the country as a strong party, thus giving space to other parties such as Pas to become the main party of Malay-Muslim politics.

“However, whether UMNO continues to be relevant in Malay Islamic political dominance can only be seen from time to time and the initial effect is certainly that UMNO has lost confidence and the public continues to doubt what is happening today and UMNO’s decision to be with PH including DAP,” he said. – MESSENGER
