UiTM Pulau Pinang won the culinary competition in Turkiye, Vietnam


PERMATANG PAUH: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Penang Branch here made its own history when it topped two international culinary competitions held in Turkey and Vietnam, respectively in November and December.

In the ‘World Cook Olympic’ competition held in Istanbul, Turkey last November 24 to 27, the UiTM Penang contingent represented by almost 20 participants including team officials was also strengthened by the presence of several representatives from Management & Science University (MSU) and Tun University Hussein Onn (UTHM).

In addition to winning the gold medal and being crowned as the overall winner of the Top Chef category, they also won silver for the best university category in the competition.

The head of the Penang UiTM contingent to Turkey, Mohd. Syafiq Othman said that the success was unexpected because they only had about two months to prepare before participating in the competition.

He who is also a culinary lecturer at the university said that apart from Malaysian representatives, the same competition was also participated by more than 20 other countries with almost 300 participants in total.

“This is the second time UiTM participated in this competition because during the first edition in 2021, another team was sent there (Turkiye) to represent Malaysia.

“However, for the first participation, it is more exposure (to international level competitions) only and we are not aiming for any victory,” he told Utusan Malaysia here recently.

Meanwhile, in the Vietnam Culinary Challenge 2022 competition held for five days starting last December 5 in Ho Chi Minh, the UiTM Penang contingent managed to bag one gold medal, six silver medals and six bronze medals as well as five diplomas in the various categories contested.

At the same time, they also took home the Best Cleanliness and Safety Award in the competition.

Team representative, Alif Firdaus Ali said, the second edition was ‘easier’ than when the same competition was held in Hanoi before.

“In Hanoi before, we faced difficulties in getting raw materials (for cooking). But here (Ho Chi Minh) it’s easier because there are more facilities,” he said.

Alif Firdaus added that his team is currently preparing to participate in another international culinary competition in Bangkok, Thailand which is expected to be held soon. – MESSENGER
