Two fishermen in a damaged boat were found safe

KEMAMAN : A boat boarded by two fishermen that suffered damage and failed to be contacted about 14 nautical miles from Kijal Beach here, yesterday was found safe, today.

Kemaman Maritime Zone Director, Maritime Commander Rashidilhadi Abd. Rashid said, the fisherman involved Mohd. Hafizrul Hisham Zakaria, 30, from Kampung Paya Berenjut with his uncle, Suhaimi Othman, 60, who were out fishing for squid were rescued by local fishermen.

“Initially, the victim managed to contact his family members at about 6pm yesterday and told them that there was damage to the propeller of the boat they were on.

“Family members tried to contact the victim again, but failed and they filed a police report,” he said in a press release here today.

Rashidilhadi said that his side had activated Op Carilamat this morning after receiving a report related to the incident and the Kilat 27 patrol boat was moved to track the position of the fishing boat.

According to him, Op Carilamat also involved the assistance of fishing boats under the Kijal and Kuala Kemaman Area Fishermen’s Association.

“However, we received information from the police that the boat was towed by local fishermen and arrived safely at Kampung Geliga Jetty, here, at about 4.30 this afternoon and Op Carilamat has ended,” he said.

In the meantime, he also called on the public who want to do any activity in the sea to always focus on safety aspects following the northeast monsoon.

“Any complaints and emergencies at sea can be reported through the MERS 999 line,” he said. – MESSENGER
