PETALING JAYA: Telekom Malaysia (TM) confirmed that 250,248 Unifi Mobile customers, comprising individuals and small and medium enterprises (SMEs), were affected by a data breach involving their contact information.
The company said in a statement that the type of data involved involved customer names, phone numbers and e-mails, but it did not involve other information.
“TM confirms that the breach has been contained and steps have been taken to minimize the potential impact on these 250,248 customers. Certain affected customers have been notified.
“Customers who did not receive any notification are those who are not affected,” according to the statement.
TM has reported the matter to the National Cyber Control and Coordination Center, the Personal Data Protection Department, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM).
It informed of a data breach on December 28 involving a limited amount of Unifi Mobile customer information.
Although additional security measures have been implemented to isolate the risk and protect its customers, TM said that customers did not experience any service disruption in the incident.
“TM is monitoring closely and is conducting additional assessments. We advise customers to take extra precautions when receiving communications from unknown parties, and to secure their online information at all times,” the statement said.
TM also stated that the privacy and security of its customers remains the company’s highest priority and that it takes the matter seriously.
“We will continue to strengthen and ensure our data security framework, policies, systems and processes are always at the benchmark of Bank Negara Malaysia’s Risk Management in Technology (RMiT) and ISO27001 standards, as well as other global standards to prevent such incidents,” he added. – MESSENGER
