GEORGE TOWN: No new cases of ‘African Swine Fever’ (ASF) infection have been detected in pig farms across the state.
In this regard, the Chief Minister, Chow Kon Yeow said, the ASF infection case in Penang is so far under control.
“There are no new cases so far and two cases were detected in farms in Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS) district only.
“We are closely monitoring the current infection situation to prevent it from spreading to other places,” he said after attending the launch of the cashless day campaign for State Government departments and agencies in Penang, here today.
Also present, State Government Secretary, Datuk Mohd. Sayuthi Bakar and the State Chairman of Local Government, Housing and Town and Country Planning, Jagdeep Singh Deo
Penang has now recorded two cases of ASF infection after two pig farms in the SPS district tested positive for the outbreak last week.
Meanwhile, Mohd. Sayuthi said, one farm infected with ASF has been destroyed and the second infected farm is still being monitored by the Veterinary Services Department (JPV).
“The second farm is still in the monitoring stage because the review found that there was indeed an infection, but the number of deaths was not high.
“We are also still waiting for the JPV’s decision whether all the pigs in this farm need to be destroyed and they will be destroyed in stages,” he said.
According to Mohd. Sayuthi, in total, in the first farm that was detected positive for ASF, as many as 1,500 pigs were destroyed.
“In the second farm involving 2,500 pigs, yesterday JPV and SPS District Officer had a discussion to determine how to implement the method to dispose of the infected carcass.
“This is because in our second farm we have a bit of an issue because this farm is a bit small and there is no space, so we need to find a new site for us to plant carcasses,” he said. – MESSENGER
