MELAKA: The irrigation and drainage problems that plague about 180 rice farmers involving 815 hectares of paddy fields in Kampung Batang Tiga near here, are expected to be overcome by 2025.
Member of the Klebang State Legislative Assembly, Datuk Lim Ban Hong, said the construction of infrastructure at a cost of RM29.4 million will overcome the issue of lack of water supply.
According to him, the second phase of the project will begin through land acquisition and compensation payment which is expected to be completed next July, before the physical works to build the pipeline from Sungai Pulau Gadong to Kampung Batang Tiga begins in September.
He said that the project has the benefit of allowing rice planting to be done five times for two years compared to twice a year before.
“The problems of the rice farmers in this village are often dependent on rainwater alone, as a result of there being no perfect irrigation and drainage system, their rice crops are often affected especially during the drought and floods.
“When this second phase project is completed within two years later, rice farmers will not face any problem in getting water supply and if there is a flood, water can be removed from the rice fields quickly.
“The construction of the water pipeline will be built from Sungai Pulau Gadong because this is the only source of water that can supply water to 180 rice farmers and is capable of covering an area of 815 hectares of rice fields,” he told reporters after visiting the rice fields in Kampung Batang Tiga here. today.
Ban Hong also handed over a water pump worth RM1,000 to a farmer, Mohd. Zubir Muhamat, 27, who cultivates a five-acre paddy field.
Meanwhile, Mohd. Zubir said that the problem of lack of water supply, especially during the drought, really affects the rice planting season.
He said that since cultivating the family’s paddy fields three years ago, the rice yield was greatly affected due to the water supply issue that had been going on for so long. – MESSENGER
