The supply of eggs is not enough in Kedah

ALOR SETAR: The government is being asked to act immediately to ensure the supply of essential goods including eggs and packet cooking oil is sufficient ahead of the Chinese New Year celebration, soon.

The president of the Kedah Consumer Association (Cake), Mohamad Yusrizal Yusoff said, at the moment there is concern about the supply of these two products which are seen to be still being sought after by consumers in the state.

According to him, although the supply of eggs in supermarkets seems to have recovered, the supply in retail stores is still declining.

“During this school holiday season, we can see that there is a high demand for eggs, but there is still not enough in the state even though the government has brought in imported eggs. After the school holidays, the demand may decrease but soon we will celebrate the Chinese New Year.

“At that time the demand will definitely increase and it is hoped that the problem will be resolved as soon as possible. Not only eggs, but cooking oil packets are also difficult to obtain. This issue has been going on for a long time but it is never ending,” he said.

He said this to reporters after reviewing the prices and supply of goods at Pasar Besar Alor Setar here today.

Meanwhile, a retail trader in the market, Milatul Shamsul Mohd. Fauzi, 36, admits that it is still difficult for retail traders to obtain supplies of the two items.

According to him, the supply received is also limited to the point that the supply of eggs sent by the supplier runs out in a short period of time, which is less than a day.

“The situation caused customers, especially food traders, to complain. If they find that the supply of eggs has arrived, customers, especially food traders, will usually buy in large quantities up to four or five boards and some have even made advance orders.

“Eggs and oil are subsidized goods and because of that, I think the government needs to take firm measures to ensure that the supply is sufficient,” he said. – MESSENGER
