The SOP for the entry of Chinese tourists to Sabah will be decided tomorrow

KOTA KINABALU: Standard operating procedure (SOP) for entry Chinese tourists to Sabah will be determined in the State Cabinet meeting tomorrow.

Thus said the Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor regarding the procedures that will be imposed on Chinese tourists who are expected to enter the state.

“Tomorrow we will hold a State Cabinet meeting to make a decision or SOP to accept tourists from China.

“Until we hold a meeting tomorrow, we can make further comments,” he said after presenting monetary aid to the victims of the high tide in Kampung Tanjung Aru Baru today.

Previously, the Chinese authorities announced permission for its citizens to travel abroad without having to provide travel details.

Following that, Chinese tourists are expected to enter Malaysia following the re-opening of the Chinese border starting on January 8.

The Malaysian Travel and Tourism Agents Association (MATTA) estimates that a total of 1.2 million Chinese tourists are expected to enter Malaysia this year.

In 2018, Sabah recorded a relatively high influx of Chinese tourists, amounting to 593,623 people.

During that year, direct flights from China to Kota Kinabalu International Airport (LTAKK) recorded a total of 125 flights per week.

However, Sabah rejected the entry of flights from China in early 2020 following the spread of the Covid-19 infection in the republic. – MESSENGER
