JAKARTA: The barbaric act of a group of students kicking an elderly woman until she fell in Tapanuli Selatan, North Sumatra saw them arrested by the police.
The incident went viral after a video recorded by one of the students was shared on social media.
Tapanuli Selatan Police Chief, Imam Zamroni confirmed that a total of six students have been detained to assist in the investigation into the incident.
He said, there are two videos that show the group of teenagers laughing after kicking the elderly woman.
“Through the first video, a group of students still in school clothes while riding a motorcycle stopped by the side of the road.
“They then saw an old woman walking with a sack, then they chatted with her.
“Suddenly, one of the students got off the motorcycle and kicked the grandmother until she fell,” he said as reported by CNN Indonesia.
In the second video, the elderly woman is seen being beaten with a stick until the stick breaks.
In addition, the police also seized two mobile phones belonging to the students and the motorcycle they were riding at the time of the incident.
The elderly woman was sent to the hospital for treatment.
In the meantime, Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister of Politics, Law and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD asked the authorities to impose strict punishment on the student group in question so that they are not imitated by others.
“What they are doing is very rude, they are not yet adults but they are already behaving like that. when they grow up, how will they behave?
“It is hoped that the authorities can impose appropriate punishment on them so that the act is not copied by any other party,” he said.
