SHAH ALAM: The Selangor 2023 budget remains in deficit, like the previous five budgets.
Selangor Menteri Besar, Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said, the state government managed to reduce the total deficit to a reasonable amount through expenditure control instruments and the practice of good financial governance principles.
“However, the deficit (Selangor Budget 2023) is higher than in 2022 for disaster management preparations due to climate change as well as the provision of substantive allocations to meet the sustainable development needs of the state of Selangor.
“Thus, the state government proposed an estimated expenditure amounting to RM2.45 billion for the Selangor Budget 2023.
“Of that amount, RM1.25 billion is for operating expenses while RM1.2 billion is for development expenses,” he said when presenting the Selangor Budget 2023 at the Annex Building, here, today.
Explaining the breakdown of operating expenses, service and supply expenses are the largest component accounting for 44.9 percent of these expenses.
According to Amirudin, the items spent on services and supplies include an increase in the minimum wage of RM1,500 for cleaning contracts, security control services and maintenance contracts involving 26 departments, Village Community Management Council (MPKK) allowances, allocations for Committee Allowances and Mosque staff as well as the rental of the headquarters building and nine Syariah Lower Courts.
“For development spending, the amount proposed for the Selangor Budget 2023 is higher than the 2022 allocation with an increase of RM77 million.
“However, the 2023 development budget will focus on the social sector unlike previous years which are usually driven by the infrastructure sector.
“This is because, the increase in the social sector allocation which includes 30 percent which is as much as RM360 million is preparation after taking into account the challenges that will be faced next year,” he stressed. – MESSENGER
