The price of eggs is high because of bird flu

NEW YORK: The United States (US) is no exception to the rise in the price of chicken eggs in addition to the increase in the price of other basic goods.

Based on data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, throughout last November, the price of chicken eggs increased by 49 percent, reported CNN.

Experts believe that the surge in the price of basic goods is due to the bird flu epidemic that has hit and caused many livestock such as chickens and ducks to die, especially turkeys and poultry.

However, the situation worsened with increasing food and energy costs for producers, in addition to high demand in supermarkets.

Bird flu has been a problem in the US for the past few months, causing wholesale prices to hit record highs lately.

The outbreak started last February and last hit in 2015, in the US.

Food Market Data Analyst Karyn Rispoli said the price of chicken eggs rose for nine consecutive weeks, hitting new daily highs.

Last Friday, he said, Midwest large-sized chicken eggs sold for US$5.46 (RM24) per dozen.

Meanwhile, last year, he explained, Urner Berry’s data showed that the price of chicken eggs was around US$1.70 (RM7.50) only.

In the meantime, Rispoli said, insufficient supply is also a contributor to the increase in the price of chicken eggs.

“There is not enough production to support the very strong retail demand this year.

“Supply is constrained due to the deadly bird flu,” he said.

Meanwhile, high demand from consumers who buy chicken eggs for cooking purposes, making kak and pastries as well as breakfast dishes also contributed to the price increase.-CNN
