The Makaf Karate Championship opens the curtain on the 2023 sports calendar

MELAKA: The Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) 2023 Open National Senior Karate Championship is the curtain-raiser to the sports calendar for this year.

The Chief Minister of Malacca, Datuk Seri Sulaiman Md. Ali said that the first tournament will be used as an example and hopefully continue to produce more new players in the future.

He said, this tournament was attended by approximately 220 athletes, coaches and officials from all over the country, including representatives of the Singaporean contingent of six people.

“I was also informed that this tournament is a platform for the national karate squad athletes to show their best performances and further qualify to represent the country at the 32nd Sea Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia which is scheduled for May 5 to 17 this year.

“The state government always supports and supports sports programs in line with Flagship 8 which is Melaka Prosperity in empowering youth and sports. As a tourism state, I am confident that sports like this will also be able to attract tourists to visit Melaka.

“It is my great hope to see that one day there will be among the athletes competing today able to represent the country, as has been shown by the senior athletes who have made the name of Melaka and also Malaysia famous,” he said when speaking in conjunction with the Makaf Open National Senior Karate Championship 2023 at Dewan Bestari Ayer Keroh here, yesterday afternoon.

In the meantime, Sulaiman also congratulated the Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Mohd. Ali Mohd. Rustam on appointment as a member of the Executive Committee of the World Karate Federation (WKF) on October 28, 2022 in Konya, Turkiye.

“The appointment which is effective for the 2022-2026 term further highlights Tun’s leadership as Makaf President at the highest level.

“This gives an impression that Tun’s leadership through sports is recognized by international bodies, thus dignifying the management of sports leadership at the national and state levels,” he explained. – MESSENGER
