GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Fishermen’s Association (PenMutiara) hopes that the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will listen to the appeal of the fishing community in Penang to unconditionally cancel the Penang South Islands (PSI) project, formerly known as the southern sea reclamation project (PSR).
The chairman of PenMutiara, Ibrahim Che Rose said, previously the appeal for the PSI project to be canceled had also been voiced by the former Member of Parliament for Permatang Pauh, Nurul Izzah Anwar.
He said that his party will hold a meeting with the Prime Minister as soon as possible to discuss the PSI project which is alleged to affect the marine ecosystem and the lives of the fishing community.
“We hope Anwar listens to our appeal and also Nurul Izzah so that the PSR project is canceled unconditionally.
“We will meet with the Prime Minister officially as soon as possible and this Tuesday, a letter will be submitted to him regarding this sea reclamation issue,” he said when contacted here today.
The PSI project or formerly known as the southern sea reclamation project (PSR) is a project covering an area of almost 17 square kilometers involving the development of three artificial islands with an area of 1,700 hectares in the waters of Permatang Damar Laut near Bayan Lepas.
However, PenMutiara claimed that about 6,000 members of the association objected to the PSI project because it allegedly affected the ocean ecosystem in the area.
On 13 July 2019, Anwar once held a meeting with the fishing community at Sungai Batu Fishing Unit to hear their complaints regarding the PSI project.
According to Ibrahim, he is confident that Anwar will keep his promise to the fishing community in the state since the Prime Minister once went to the field to personally meet with the fishing community at the Sungai Batu Fishing Unit.
“However, if this project still wants to continue, we will submit an appeal to the Environmental Quality Act Appeal Board 1974 (AKAS 1974),” he said. – MESSENGER
