Suu Kyi was sentenced to 7 years in prison

NAYPYIDAW: Myanmar’s ousted democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to another seven years in prison after her long series of trials ended today, with the Nobel laureate now facing more than three decades behind bars.

A military prisoner since last year’s coup, Suu Kyi, 77, has been convicted of every charge brought against her from corruption to illegally possessing a walkie talkie including violating Covid-19 restrictions.

Suu Kyi was jailed for seven years on five counts of corruption related to the recruitment, maintenance and purchase of helicopters for government ministers, where she allegedly caused losses to the country.

Suu Kyi has been sentenced to 33 years in prison after 18 months of court proceedings despite being rejected by human rights groups as false.

“All his cases have been completed and there are no more charges against him,” said the source, who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Journalists were barred from attending the trial and Suu Kyi’s lawyer was barred from speaking to the media.

An AFP reporter in the city said the road leading to the prison where Suu Kyi is being held in the military-built capital of Naypyidaw was free from traffic jams ahead of the verdict.

According to the source, the former President of Myanmar, Win Myint who was accused along with Suu Kyi in the latest trial, also received the same sentence and both will appeal.

The source also said Suu Kyi was seen to be in good health.
