LONDON: British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak called for “bold and radical” actions to be taken to reform the country’s health system which is currently facing various crises.
The call was made after Sunak held a meeting with senior officials of the National Health Service (NHS) to find the best solution to deal with the health crisis affecting the country.
After facing years of underfunding, the NHS is struggling to meet the demand for emergency medical care in winter, with a surge in Covid-19 and flu cases.
In fact, hospital and ambulance staff went on strike over the issue of salary increases due to inflation, which many residents sympathized with their cause.
At the same time, nurses for the first time in 100 years, are demanding a pay rise following an increase in inflation above 10 percent.
After being accused of failing to act, Sunak held a meeting with the Chief Medical Officer of England, Chris Witty and the Chief Executive of NHS England, Amanda Pritchard in Downing Street yesterday.
The Downing Street office said in a statement that the meeting was held ahead of planned talks between government officials and trade unions aimed at ending the strike.
“Right now, we need to bring a bold and radical approach as we did before to overcome the problem.
“I think we need the same approach at this time.
“Together we can decide on actions that will bring change to the country and all families in a short period of time,” explained the statement.
Last week, Sunak in his speech highlighted five priorities for 2023 including shortening NHS waiting times.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the Royal College of Nursing Union, Pat Cullen announced that he will attend a meeting with the UK Health Minister, Steve Barclay.
He said, Sunak should negotiate directly with the nurses to prevent the planned strike on January 18 and 19 from happening. – AFP
