Sukma Perlis athletes receive state government incentives


KANGAR: A total of 32 Perlis athletes who recorded excellent achievements during the 20th Malaysian Sports Championship (Sukma) in Kuala Lumpur last September received state government incentives.

At the organization of the Games, the Sukma Perlis contingent managed to bring home six gold, seven silver and 10 bronze medals through nine sports events.

The state Youth and Sports Chairman, Muhammad Azmir Azizan, said the total amount of incentives was worth RM144,000 to be given to athletes, coaches and sports coordinators who successfully contributed medals in the tournament.

“Although Perlis did not succeed in achieving the set target, the athletes and coaches have shown good commitment to carry the state’s name,” he said after the Perlis Athletes Victory Incentive Presentation Ceremony at the State Secretary’s Office (SUK) Banquet Hall here today, which was also attended. by the Director of the Perlis State Sports Council (MSN), Anuar Abidin.

In the same ceremony, Muhammad Azmir also had the opportunity to hand over an additional winning incentive amounting to RM3,000 to the athletics athlete, Datuk Abdul Latif Romly who brought home the gold medal during the 11th ASEAN Para Championships in the long jump event.

Also receiving an additional incentive amounting to RM5,000 is the national bowling athlete, Syafiqa Haidar Afif Abdul Rahman who brought home the silver medal during the 22nd Birmingham Commonwealth Games recently.

In addition, a total of nine Sukma athletes also received winning incentives after bringing home eight gold, five silver and two bronze medals through three sports events with a total amount of RM80,500.

In the meantime, Muhammad Azmir said, Perlis is also targeting 20 gold medals at the upcoming Sukma games through several steps that will be implemented after this.

“I have also heard the presentation of the State Sports Development Plan 2022-2026 before to see the filling of modules that are more appropriate for the athletes,” he said.

He added that there are a number of sports categories that have been identified as having the potential to bring excellence to the state of Perlis such as athletics, weight lifting, field bowling, sepak takraw and a few more.

“We are also planning to organize the Perlis Sports Awards which are expected to take place early next year as an award for the state’s athletes,” he said.MESSENGER
