PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today announced that Datuk Sudha Devi KR Vasudevan’s tenure as Chairman of the Commonwealth Foundation has been extended.
The good news follows all 56 member countries of the Commonwealth Organization unanimously supporting the re-appointment of the incumbent for the next two years.
“He is on duty once again as chairman of the foundation which started on January 1 until December 31, 2024,” Wisma Putra said in a statement here.
Sudha Devi took the helm on January 1, 2021 after being elected by the Extraordinary Meeting of the Commonwealth Foundation Board of Governors in London, Britain on October 28, 2020.
The decision was subsequently certified by the Commonwealth Heads of Government on 7 December 2020 who confirmed that the Malaysian candidate received the most votes.
The Malaysian diplomat even beat three other candidates, each from Kenya, Cameroon and Papua New Guinea. The Commonwealth Foundation was first established in 1966.
Sudha Devi’s appointment as chairman is very historic as she is the representative of Malaysia and the first chairman from the Asian region to lead the foundation.
Commenting further, Wisma Putra said that his continued service proved Malaysia’s significant role in firmly supporting the foundation more than 50 years ago.
“As chairman, he has great responsibility in leading all board meetings, representing the foundation and being an ambassador for the vision of the Commonwealth’s mission,” he said.
Previously, Sudha Devi was the Malaysian High Commissioner in Australia, Malaysian Ambassador to Brazil as well as various diplomatic posts in Germany, Singapore and Switzerland.
He has been Director General of the Policy Planning Department, Secretary of the East Asia Division and Deputy Director General of the ASEAN-Malaysia National Secretariat.
The Commonwealth Foundation was established to encourage people’s involvement in public dialogue, exchange views and act together to build a democratic society.
This organization also plays a role in ensuring that every government institution and public policy can contribute to universal development through the influence of the people’s voice. – MESSENGER
