PETALING JAYA: Every year, the hall at Axiata Arena, Bukit Jalil in conjunction with the organization of the Championship Malaysian Open Badminton being one of the courts that is difficult for the world’s best badminton players to conquer due to the relatively strong wind factor.

However, for the country’s mixed doubles pair, Shevon Lai and Goh Soon Huat, it’s as if it’s normal, they’re tired of the situation and refuse to make it a weakness in their efforts to start the 2023 campaign on the right foot.

It will be a tough task to end China’s dominance in this event as it has been won by the No. 3 pair for three years in a row. 1 World, Zheng Si Wei-Hua Ya Qiong.

Malaysia, on the other hand, has been without a champion in the mixed doubles event for a long time, with the last time it was captured by the tandem of Tan Aik Huang-Teoh Siew Yong in 1963.

“As usual in the Axiata Arena, the wind is strong. For us this is normal because we have been playing on this court for years.

“I hope we can adapt before this match because every day there will be a difference (wind strength) from what we tested before. So it depends on us when we perform later,” explained Shevon.

Shevon and Soon Huat are one of the five national representatives in the mixed doubles event, which is also the largest participation of the national squad compared to any other event in the competition this time.

They will start the first round match against the Taiwanese representative, Chang Koh Chi-Lee Chih Chen who have never been opposed before.

“We have never seen this Taiwanese pair (how to play) and have never played against them. So when you fight sometimes it’s a little weird.
