Seven cases of fake news, insulting the king, religious people are investigated

JOHOR BAHRU: A total of seven investigation papers were opened by the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) related to the spread of fake news, racist hate articles and involving religious sentiments.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital, Teo Nie Ching said, the action was taken through the establishment of a Special Team to Tackle Fake News which was created by the ministry on December 1.

His side is still waiting for further action regarding the investigation which is currently in the action of the Attorney General’s Office.

“The investigation paper involved errors in writing articles related to hate news, insulting kings, racism and also religious sentiments. This is important because it is the advice of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong and also the sultans in this country.

“Therefore, we have cooperated with the PDRM and the Attorney General to ensure that any offense committed in relation to these matters will be dealt with strictly according to the law,” he said after visiting the Johor Radio and Television Malaysia (RTM) Office, here today. which was also joined by Stulang State Assemblyman Andrew Chen Kah Eng and Johor Jaya Assemblyman Liow Cai Tung.

Nie Ching, who is also a Member of Parliament for Kulai, said that the government does not intend to restrict people’s access to the digital world through various social media platforms.

“Now that social media has become a platform used by everyone, we cannot stop their access and that is not the government’s intention.

“But we want to educate and improve digital literacy so that people become more digitally literate to get authentic information, especially through local news agencies,” he explained.

In the meantime, his party is ready to hold discussions with local telecommunications companies to upgrade the quality of internet services, especially in university campuses across the country.

“If any university is facing internet network problems, I welcome the university to contact us so that we can hold a meeting, we will cooperate with the telecommunications company so that the university campus has a good network service for students.

“This is a basic need, a service needed by all levels of society, especially students. So, we will help,” he said. – MESSENGER
