Senior KLIA2 Immigration official cleared of corruption charges

SHAH ALAM: A senior officer of the Malaysian Immigration Department (Immigration) was released and acquitted of corruption charges amounting to RM1,000 by the Sessions Court at the final stage of the proceedings, today.

Mohd. Faizzan Sani, 35, who was on duty as the Deputy Assistant Director of Immigration at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2) was released after Judge Rozilah Salleh found that the defense succeeded in proving reasonable doubt.

“The passport and security deposit are returned, while documents and exhibits are returned after 14 days if there is no appeal,” he said.

Mohd Faizzan is accused of accepting a bribe of RM1,000 from three Immigration assistants who acted as middlemen to release foreigners from any action in accordance with the Immigration Act 1959/63.

The offense was allegedly committed on levels one and two of the KLIA2 control and security section between November 2019 and the same month of 2020.

Prosecution in accordance with Section 25 (1) and (2) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009 which provides for a maximum prison sentence of 10 years, a maximum fine of RM100,000 or both if convicted.

Mohd Faizzan was represented by lawyers, Ahmad Ishrakh Saad and Fadzil Noor Alias, while the prosecution was handled by Deputy Public Prosecutor, Irna Julieza Maaras.

Meanwhile, Mohd Faizzan when met expressed his gratitude and relief at the court’s decision in his favour.

“In April last year, I was instructed to do self-defense. That surprised me as I had expected to go free and clear of charges.

“However, it gave me the opportunity to obtain additional documents regarding the work schedule and the arrival of employees. There are doubts about my charges,” he said. – MESSENGER
