DOHA: After pulling off a surprise win over the four-time champions, Germany in the first action of the World Cup last Wednesday, Japan faced concerns when they met Costa Rica today after the fate of two defensive pillars, Takehiro Tomiyasu and Hiroki Sakai, was uncertain.
Tomiyasu made an impact as a substitute as the Blue Samurai came from 0-1 down to stun Germany 2-1 in Group E.
However, the 24-year-old is again plagued by a right thigh problem, an injury which has caused him to miss Arsenal’s last two games in the Premier League.
Even more troubling for Japan, the experienced right back, Sakai is also not sure if he can be sent down as he has just recovered from a problem hamstrings.
According to Kyodo News, Sakai, 31, suffered an injury the night before the match against Germany, while Tomiyasu was injured shortly after the match.
“I believe that the injury is not that bad and I am ready to play in the match against Costa Rica.
“Whatever, it all depends on the coach and the medical team,” said Sakai, a pillar
Urawa Red Diamonds.
In the first action, Sakai was substituted in the 75th minute, which was after Japan tied the score 1-1 and since then he did not undergo training.
Sakai said he had forgotten the victory over Germany and was focused on beating Costa Rica. – AGENCIES
