Safawi Rasid’s former teammate, Gonda was hailed as a Japanese hero

DOHA: Among the heroes of the Japanese squad that should be lifted in driving the team’s success in winning over Germany in Group E action of the 2022 World Cup is the goalkeeper, Shuichi Gonda, who managed to save his goal from being conceded more by Die Mannschaft’s attacking machine.

Although Japan’s goal was conceded through an Ikay Gundogan penalty in the first half of the game, the 33-year-old goalkeeper managed to keep out at least four dangerous German attempts in the second half.

His brilliant performance also gave confidence to the attacking machine to push the German fortress, and they managed to score twice through Ritsu Doan and Asano in the space of eight minutes to ensure that they started their World Cup campaign on the right foot.

Gonda, currently playing with the Shimizu S-Pulse team in the Japanese League, once teamed with national striker Safawi Rasid in Portimonense SC in the Portuguese League during the 2020 season.

Gonda started making appearances with the Japanese national squad in 2010 and began to gain confidence to replace Eiji Kawashima in 2019 and since then has often been used as the blue samurai squad’s last line of defense at the international level.

Japan will now meet Costa Rica on Sunday and a win will brighten their chances for the next stage.
