DOHA: Cristiano Ronaldo showed great wisdom in getting a controversial penalty during Portugal’s win over Ghana at the 2022 World Cup, said a member of Fifa’s technical review group, Sunday Oliseh.
In that match, Ronaldo went down after being tackled by Mohammed Salisu before he scored the resulting penalty to become the first player to score in five World Cups.
Ghana coach Otto Addo also described the penalty decision as a ‘gift’ to Ronaldo and said it was a completely wrong decision.
“Maybe the attackers are getting smarter.
“If you look at the penalty that Ronaldo got, well, people can say what they want about this guy, but he thinks to be patient and put his feet to touch the ball first before you, keep moving so that you touch his feet, that’s genius.
“Let’s give credit to the strikers for being smarter,” said Oliseh who is also a former Nigeria international at a press conference when asked why more penalties have been awarded at the tournament so far than in previous years.
So far, a total of nine penalties have been awarded in the first round of group stage matches.
“VAR is also the main reason why this (more penalties are awarded) is happening because the referee can now look at it three or four times and make a decision,” Oliseh added.-AGENCIES
