SEREMBAN: Since more than five years ago, the residents of Kampung Kadir, Nilai, had to hold back smelly and meloyakan from the sewage plant belonging to a nearby residential area that flows into Sungai Batang Labu, Nilai, here.
A resident, Saleh Jaratin, 64, said the stench was believed to be caused by sewage that was discharged without following a systematic procedure by the developer.
“The smell is really strong with the black water especially when the water is released from the plant twice a day at 8 am and 3 pm.
“The sewage flows through the ditch behind my house before entering the main river. Previously, other residents had complained to the developer and they informed the plant’s pump was not working,” he said when met by Utusan Malaysia here.
Abdul Jailani Mokhtar, 68, said that every day he had to endure such a strong smell that he could not eat and had difficulty sleeping.
“The house must also always be closed to prevent bad air from outside from entering the house.
“If the heavy rain continues, foul water overflows up to the yard and garbage including baby diapers washes away from the sewage plant of the nearby housing estate,” he said, who has lived in the village for the past 30 years.
Meanwhile, Salmah Jamal, 70, said that the situation also caused the river water in front of her house which was previously clear to turn black in addition to emitting a foul smell.
Salmah said that the situation clearly showed that dirty water from other places had been channeled into the river in question.
“We used to be able to bathe and fish in this river, but now we can’t anymore because it is dirty and interferes with ventilation.
“I’m used to this foul smell, but if outsiders really can’t stand the smell, sometimes it’s like smelling a corpse coupled with garbage thrown into the river by irresponsible parties,” he added. – MESSENGER
