KUALA LUMPUR: There will be no Malaysian representative in the finals of the Malaysian Open, tomorrow, after the country’s sole representative, Rachel Arnold, was eliminated in the semi-finals by second seed Nele Gilis at the Bukit Jalil National Squash Center near here today.
The Kuala Lumpur-born player who is ranked 26th in the world gave fierce resistance before losing 12-10, 0-11, 9-11, 11-7, 6-11 to player No. 14 world, Gilis from Belgium.
From the beginning of the game, Rachel, who was placed as the eighth seed, displayed an aggressive game until she managed to steal the first point when she won 12-10.
However, in the second set, Gilis redoubled her efforts until the player who was Malaysia’s hope trailed 0-5 and the gap in points pushed Rachel to give up the game easily 0-11.
In the third set, Rachel, who improved her game, still failed to match Gilis’s pace until she lost in the game, before rising to tie the score at 2-2 in the fourth set and at once, dragging the Belgian player into action in the deciding set.
Luck turned out not to be on Rachel’s side, when the 2019 Malaysian Open champion finally conceded with a 6-11 result in the fifth set that gave Gilis the victory.
Rachel, when met by reporters, said that she was a little nervous to face Gilis because she had lost to the player 0-3 at the British Open, last year.
“Gilis is a very fit player and he played very well.
“As for me, in terms of my stamina level, I have improved a lot and I am confident that I will slowly be able to compete with the world’s best players,” he said.
The 26-year-old player, who will compete in the World Women’s Team Championship in Cairo, Egypt this December, expressed his confidence that he will be able to break into the world’s top 20 ranking, which is his target, next year.
Gilis’ victory over Rachel in the semi-finals, will find her either the first choice, Olivia Flechter from the United States or the representative of Wales, Tesni Evans, who is placed as the third choice in the final, tomorrow. – ONLINE MESSENGER
