[PAU 2022] UMNO election before May 19

KUALA LUMPUR: The previously postponed UMNO all-level elections are expected to be held before May 19 this year.

UMNO Secretary General, Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said that the date was after taking into account the period of six months from the date of casting the ballot for the 15th General Election (GE15) on 19 November last.

He said, it was to clarify because his party did not rule out the possibility that there would be UMNO representatives who would raise issues regarding party election ethics and when the party election would take place.

“Party elections at all levels of Branches, Divisions and Supreme Councils including wing Exco must be completed before 19 May 2023.

“(However) the announcement about the date was not made during the 2022 UMNO General Assembly, of course there will be a period of several weeks to make a decision,” he said in a press conference at the Media Site at the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Center (WTC).

A total of 2,838 delegates from all levels are involved in UMNO General Assembly 2022 this time.

They consist of 57 members of the Supreme Council (MT), 30 representatives of party wings, 2569 representatives of Divisions and 182 heads of information who are involved as observers.

According to Ahmad, the UMNO assembly this time focused on the future of the party including how to move forward in addition to learning from GE15.

“Despite being in seven by-elections (PRK), he won 75 percent in the Melaka State Election (PRN) and won 72 percent in the Johor PRN.

“Seven by-elections and two by-elections of which all the presidents are Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, why can’t the success be repeated during the general election?

“Of course there was an extraordinary reason that caused us to lose, only 30 seats were available. So I would like to hear what are the views and comments on why there is such an abnormality, what are the reasons, causes and plans that can be improved in the future,” he said.

In addition, he added, preparations for the PRN in six states are also expected to be the focus of the debate this time.

“The debaters will discuss the three stages starting tomorrow,” he said. – MESSENGER
