Padang Serai PH candidates hope for a BN compromise

KULIM: Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate for Padang Serai Parliament, Dr. Mohamad Sofee Razak expects the leadership of his party and Barisan Nasional (BN) to hold discussions to determine the direction ahead of the 15th General Election (GE15) in the area.

Mohamad Sofee, who is also Kedah’s PH Secretary, said that he personally hoped that BN would compromise so that they could face one-on-one with Perikatan Nasional (PN) there.

This is because he said, the victory in Padang Serai in the delayed GE15 will be a very meaningful gift to be given to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim who is also the PH Chairman.

“We have now formed a government with PH, BN and several other parties. I hope BN can give PH full opportunity to fight one on one with PN because I see a real competition between PH and PN.

“I expect there will probably be a discussion at the top level and a compromise to give PH a chance in Padang Serai. Throughout this campaign, many people have asked this question, even BN supporters are confused because it is already the government (don’t know) which one to support, but I told you to support PH,” he said when met yesterday.

Last Thursday, Parti Warisan announced to withdraw from contesting in the Padang Serai Parliamentary GE15 despite the participation of its candidate, Mohd. Bakhri Hashim has been accepted by the Election Commission (SPR) based on the nomination process on November 5.

GE15 in the area was postponed to December 7 following the death of the previous PH candidate, the late M. Karupaiya on November 16 who died while receiving treatment at Kulim Hospital.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Sofee said, Karupaiya’s performance record challenged him to continue his excellent service in the area throughout his term as a representative.

“To ensure that, I have to work hard in Padang Serai and cannot take it lightly even though the community’s response to the PH campaign is encouraging. We hope voters will continue to support and welcome throughout this campaign,” he said.

In the meantime, commenting on the wave of PN that hit until the coalition won 13 parliamentary seats in Kedah, Mohamad Sofee admitted not to underestimate the ability of the opponent.

“I do not deny what happened in the recent GE, how we see the wave of PAS and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in PN. We hope to be able to correct the narrative brought by PN which until today is still playing with race and religion issues.

“It is a big task for PH to correct the true narrative. PH will meet the people, we don’t use channels to bash but the opposite method is to explain what PH has to offer,” he said. – MESSENGER
