Othman resigned, urging Ahmad Zahid and Jamil Khir to take the same step

ALOR SETAR: Deputy Chairman of the state UMNO Liaison Board, Datuk Othman Aziz urged Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi resigned as President due to Barisan Nasional’s (BN) poor performance in the 15th General Election (GE15).

At the same time, Othman who lost in the Jerlun Parliament also resigned as Deputy Chairman of the Kedah UMNO Liaison Body for taking moral responsibility following the defeat of BN, especially UMNO in the state.

According to Othman, the voters, especially the Malays, gave a clear indication in the GE15 that they did not like the style and way the UMNO leaders steered the party.

He said, for that reason, UMNO needs to be left to other individuals who may have new ways and ideas to re-mobilize the party to face big challenges including the State Election (PRN) soon.

“We have tried our best and accepted this (defeat) as the Malay people’s absolute rejection of UMNO, so of course we feel the need to reshape or overhaul UMNO’s leadership.

“So as President, I urge Datuk Seri Dr. Ahmad Zahid thought openly and with a big heart to give up his position,” he told reporters, here today.

In GE15, Kedah BN lost all 14 contested seats including UMNO Vice President, Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid and Kedah BN Chairman, Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom.

In the meantime, Othman advised Jamil Khir to also be generous by resigning from his position as responsibility for BN’s defeat in Kedah.

“We need to see that we are all responsible and the matter of other positions such as the UMNO Divisional Head is different because it is through the party’s election at the divisional level, but for this appointed position I think it is good that he resigns.

“This is because we need to be seen to learn from mistakes and give space to others to take over and then draw up strategies and plans that suit the current atmosphere and situation,” he said.

He said, although the situation is likened to rice turning into porridge, UMNO needs to take steps to ensure that the party remains relevant in the future.

“The group of positions left behind by the UMNO leadership will now be filled with other figures who are able to steer the party at the state and central levels with a neater strategy. – MESSENGER
