New Year’s Eve Op; 2,016 summons issued in Penang


GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Police issued a total of 2,016 summons during the 2023 New Year’s Threshold Op which was carried out from December 30 to January 1.

State Police Chief, Datuk Mohd. Shuhaily Mohd. Zain said, in the same operation, a total of 146 vehicles were seized while seven individuals were arrested for various offences, including drunken driving, using fake registration numbers and drug offences.

“Op Ambang Tahun Baru 2023, which involves 1,294 officers and members, focuses on the prevention of crime and street gangs in coordination with other agencies.

“To ensure that the New Year 2023 is not polluted with the activities of street thugs, the police together with agencies such as the Road Transport Department (JPJ) and the Department of the Environment (JAS) have set up roadblocks to identify road users who break the law,” he said in press conference at the Penang Police Contingent Headquarters (IPK), here today.

According to him, the police are also conducting crime prevention operations in several areas where the public and visitors are concentrated.

“As a result of the operation, a total of 61 entertainment center premises and a total of 5,340 vehicles were inspected.

“In addition, a total of 6,427 individuals were examined and urine tested, of which a total of 71 individuals were arrested for various offenses under the Firearms Act 1971, the Poisons Act, the Dangerous Drugs Act, the Organizations Act and so on,” he said.

He added that the Penang police will continue to carry out such operations to ensure that the situation in the state remains peaceful. – MESSENGER
