Many countries are starting to enforce regulations to restrict Chinese tourists

NEW YORK: Washington will implement new Covid-19 rules on all travelers from China who want to enter the country following concerns about a ‘lack of transparent data’.

The move comes after Japan, India and Malaysia announced strict rules on visitors from China, following a surge in virus infections.

“There is great concern in the international community about the development of Covid-19 cases in China as well as the lack of transparent data including genome sequencing data reported from the PRC,” said officials in Washington.

Some hospitals and funeral homes in China are overcrowded with a backlog of patients after the epidemic began to spread again in the country of 1.4 billion people.

Official statistics have only reported one case of death due to Covid-19 in the past seven days, thus raising doubts among health experts about the data released by the government.

Meanwhile, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on Tuesday announced that the country will re-tighten border controls on travelers from China following the increase in the number of daily Covid-19 cases.

Starting this Friday, Japan requires all visitors from China and individuals who have visited China within the past seven days to undergo a Covid-19 smear test upon arrival.

Individuals who are confirmed positive must be quarantined for seven days, while those with asymptomatic symptoms must be quarantined for five days.

In order to ensure the transparency of smear tests and infection detection, the government will enforce the rules of arrival and departure of passengers from China, Hong Kong and Macau only through four airports in Narita, Haneda, Kansai and Chubu.

The government also asked airline operators not to increase the number of flights for the route.

The move was taken a day after the Chinese Government announced the re-opening of border gates starting on January 8 as well as abolishing quarantine rules to curb the spread of the Covid-19 virus.

According to Kishida, the temporary measure aims to prevent people with the virus from ‘spreading the infection’ to Japan.

“The government will also take a flexible approach while considering the infection situation in China.

“We are also taking precautionary measures not to stop the flow of international visitors,” he said.-REUTERS
