Man missing in Tasik Gubir found drowned

SIK: After a three-day search and rescue operation (SAR) for a man who was lost in a strong current, the victim was finally confirmed dead after being found floating in the middle of the river in Tasik Gubir, here.

The victim, Muhammad Amirul Akmal Rashid, 29, who hails from Kulim, was found near here about 50 meters from the scene at 4.47pm this afternoon.

District Police Chief, Deputy Superintendent Abdull Razak Osman said, the victim was found fully clothed in the SAR operation which resumed early this morning.

“The body was taken to the Gubir Lake base jetty before being sent to Sik Hospital for the post-mortem process and the victim’s death was classified as sudden death,” he said here today.

Abdull Razak said the SAR was accompanied by members of the Fire and Rescue Department, the Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM), and the Malaysian Jariah Foundation Volunteer Fire and Rescue Brigade.

“In addition, the operation was also assisted by members of the public who worked hard with the authorities to find the victim since the day his disappearance was reported,” he said.

Last Monday, the victim who worked at a factory in Kulim was feared to have drowned after falling while trying to cross the river while camping with seven other friends in the Tasik Gubir area.

They are said to have been camping in the area since Sunday, but early the next morning the victim and five friends boarded a boat to fish in the lake area and left two other friends in the camping area.

However, at 1.30pm the five of them returned to the campsite to fish by the river.
