JKDM confiscated firecrackers, fireworks for Chinese New Year

RANTAU PANJANG: The Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) Kelantan confiscated various types of firecrackers and fireworks weighing 2,159 kilograms (kg) which is believed to be smuggled from neighboring countries for the Chinese New Year celebration in a raid in Kampung Padang Pak Amat Pasir Puteh, yesterday.

The confiscation of firecrackers and fireworks worth RM35,631.57 including tax was carried out by JKDM after detaining a lorry and a four-wheel drive at 9.50pm.

Its director, Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said, however, the two suspects managed to escape by leaving the vehicle as soon as they realized the presence of law enforcement officers.

According to him, the results of the inspection in the lorry found various types of firecrackers and fireworks believed to be smuggled from the neighboring country, Thailand in conjunction with the Chinese New Year celebration.

“The modus operandi used by the smugglers is to unload the goods on a small scale from the Malaysia-Thailand border area in Sungai Golok, Rantau Panjang using four-wheel drive.

“The fireworks that were successfully smuggled will then be transported into a three-ton truck that is waiting in an open area in Kampung Padang Pak Amat, Pasir Puteh,” he said during a press conference at the JKDM Rantau Panjang Office here today.

Wan Jamal Abdul Salam said, his party did not rule out the possibility that the firecrackers and fireworks were believed to be for the market around the Klang Valley.

He said the case was investigated in accordance with Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967.

“At the same time, JKDM is conducting an investigation to trace the two drivers to solve this smuggling case,” he said.MESSENGER
