KUANTAN: The appearance of more than 100 jellyfish on the beach in Batu Hitam, about 10 meters long, surprised visitors who came there yesterday afternoon.
Kuantan Malaysian Civil Defense Force (APM) Operations Officer, Norisman Idris, said he found the poisonous jellyfish stranded at around 6pm.
According to him, the marine life is present every time the monsoon season arrives and is on the beach when the tide recedes in the afternoon.
“We became aware of the presence of the white and poisonous jellyfish when one of the officers was injured when he was stung during a swimming exercise.
“However, the results of the survey this morning found that no more jellyfish appeared as happened yesterday afternoon (Friday).
“The appearance of a group of jellyfish is the second incident this year and we found it to be a type of poisonous white jellyfish. If stung, it could result in the victim having to be treated in hospital,” he said when met at Pantai Batu Hitam here today.
Commenting further, Norisman said, APM takes precautionary measures if there is another appearance of jellyfish in the area such as placing warning signs and raising red flags.
“Some beach attendants will also warn visitors not to approach the beach for fear of being stung by jellyfish.
“Now is the season for jellyfish to come to the beach, so we ask that visitors always be careful and take precautions and keep an eye on their children,” he said.
Meanwhile, Pahang Fisheries Officer, Abdullah Jaafar, when contacted, also advised visitors to the beach not to touch the jellyfish.
“Visitors need to stay away from jellyfish areas and avoid playing in the water or bathing in areas near the jellyfish.
“This is to avoid risks because there are fears that there are dangerous jellyfish such as ‘Hydrozoan jellyfish’ or Portugese Man o’ War and ‘Cubozoan jellyfish’ or Box jellyfish whose stings are very poisonous and can cause serious injury or even death,” he said. – MESSENGER
