Jakim needs to get help from local experts regarding halal status

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), is urged to get experts related to authentication technology halal from local universities and do not take lightly the claims and halal status of food products, especially involving food for children.

The president of the Islamic Consumers Association of Malaysia (PPIM), Datuk Nadzim Johan said that the agencies involved should study more carefully and in-depth the issue of halal status for each food product to avoid confusion among consumers.

He said, the department should always make improvements from the point of view of user needs because if it fails to implement, it could bring worse effects in the future.
“This is not the first time the halal status issue has been raised, it has happened many times, for example we can see the halal status case Cadbury previously, Jakim said otherwise, other parties said the opposite, but in the end the victim is the consumer.

“My suggestion is that we appoint any expert from the university to help in conducting the halal status test in detail, and they can also provide additional input in obtaining the legal halal status for each food product,” he said when contacted by Utusan Malaysia.

Utusan Malaysia reports that there are at least four imported food products with halal logos from abroad that are recognized by Jakim as having pork gelatin.

He also thinks Jakim needs to change the halal verification procedure so that they don’t only rely on one department if the halal decision issued is contradictory.

“For me, Jakim needs to change their procedures, we need to protect consumers, and to get this halal status is not an easy thing, so we need cooperation with certain bodies to analyze if each food contains pig deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) or not.

“The time has come for us to appoint experts such as scientists and chemists from private laboratories to help if there are complaint cases involving halal, because cases like this have been going on for a long time and often repeat themselves, until they want to be in a long time,” he said.

Asked if Jakim needs to be overhauled or not, Nadzim explained that it would be better to see first if there are any changes from Jakim regarding this issue.

“I suggest setting up a center or application to allow users to have access to check or analyze the content of certain foods they want to eat. This is sometimes, people go to check and even send, the analysis is not done.

“With the application, it’s easier for them to know what they can eat or not and can prevent them from consuming food that cannot be eaten as Muslims,” he said.

Meanwhile, another NGO hopes that Jakim will change the halal verification procedure, i.e. not only depending on the decision of the authoritative department if there is a discrepancy related to the halal status of a product.

President of the People’s Community Organization (Pekemas), Faizan Mohd. Nor said that the change in procedures is necessary, especially if there are complaints from laboratories that have credibility in making halal checks, thus being able to support the verification of each product so that it is completely free from pig elements.

He said, if such a policy is that every case complaint review only receives analysis results from the government department’s laboratory that surpasses all other laboratory analysis results, then the policy needs to be changed including if it is contained in the relevant law or act.

“We know that the department does not only check the halal status of products but also analyzes various cases such as forensics and crimes that require laboratory tests. So of course they have a burden of duty.-MESSENGER
