Israel detains hundreds of Palestinian activists and social media users

RAMALLAH: Israeli security authorities continued their brutality against Palestinians as they arrested hundreds of Palestinian activists and social media users on the grounds of inciting violence, Palestinian human rights groups reported.

The Palestinian Detention Study Center confirmed that approximately 410 Palestinians were detained over the past year because of their social media activities, especially on Facebook.

According to the portal Arab Newsthe human rights group insists the number continues to rise compared to 390 people in 2021, 220 people in 2020, 184 people in 2019 and 45 people in 2018.

The spokesman for the Palestinian Human Rights Association, Shahid, said that the action clearly violates the rights of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

He also described the move as a dangerous development in Israel’s policy of repression against the Palestinian Territories, and claimed that Israel had significantly increased detentions last year to restrict Palestinian freedom of expression.

If Israel continues its policy of repression, Shahid is convinced that it will lead to a violent atmosphere that continues to undermine the issue of human rights.

Previously, Israel tried to put pressure on Meta, which owns Facebook and Instagram, to block Palestinian accounts that were allegedly inciting violence against Israel.

Following that, Meta suspended and blocked hundreds of Palestinian accounts, causing many Palestinian activists to turn to the TikTok and Telegram platforms.

Shahid claimed that some Palestinians were arrested just for expressing anger against Israel’s continued oppression and aggression in the Palestinian territories, without inciting violence.
