PUTRAJAYA: All levels of leadership and members need to be held accountable and involved in a large-scale ‘autopsy’ through the UMNO party election that has already decided the top leadership.
Segambut Division UMNO head, Datuk Mahathir Sulaiman insisted that party elections at all levels of positions, especially UMNO’s highest positions, must be contested this year, as was also decided in the previous Special UMNO General Assembly (PAU).
He said, if there are rumors that there will be a motion to be submitted so that the two highest positions of the party are not held at the PAU next week, then as a member, it is clearly an act of disrespecting the decision of the Special PAU.
“I respect the institution of the President and I want this institution to be empowered after the heavy defeat of UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN) in the history of the national election in the last GE-15.
“Let the support for the President and our party now be strengthened through the election of a healthy party,” he said in a statement today.
According to him, such a big decision needs to be made collectively by all party members, including at the grassroots level, and not just a handful of delegates who are present through cheers or applause that resonates in the Kuala Lumpur World Trade Center (WTCKL) Independence Hall next week.
He explained, don’t all be complacent, swayed and act as if this party does not have any problems by deciding not to conduct party elections.
It’s just, he said, because a handful of the party’s top leaders are in the ranks of the government’s Cabinet these days.
“This party election is more of a party matter and not or has nothing to do with the government today.
“The spirit of all our party members down to the grassroots level needs to be heard and respected!” he said. – MESSENGER
