Immediately resolve the Tanjong Karang tire burst issue

KUALA SELANGOR: The new government has been asked to immediately resolve the issue of burst tires in Kampung Sungai Kajang, Tanjong Karang here, to overcome the flooding around the area which is burdening the residents.

Member of Parliament for Tanjong Karang, Datuk Dr. Zulkafperi Hanapi said the breakwater project worth RM12 million had been approved by the previous government, however, the project was still a question mark until now.

“So far I have not received any information related to the project and am concerned that it is not a priority.

“Therefore, I ask the newly elected government to give priority to solving the issue immediately so that it does not happen again,” he said after inspecting the repair work on the flat tire on the coast of Kampung Sungai Kajang, this afternoon.

Yesterday, Utusan Malaysia reported that a total of 111 victims were moved to two temporary evacuation centers (PPS) after their homes were hit by floods due to two burst tires around Tanjong Karang.

The two locations involved the area around Kampung Baru Lembah Pantai and Kampung Ban RB, Sungai Sireh.

All the victims consisted of 38 families including the elderly, children and babies.

Zulkafperi explained that the construction of a breakwater needs to be implemented to prevent nearby areas such as Kampung Baru Lembah Pantai from being involved and the town of Tanjong Karang from being flooded.

“The area near the coast was previously a mangrove swamp area.

“If the problem continues, I am worried that the situation will worsen and the sea water will overflow to Tanjong Karang Town which is only three kilometers from the coast,” he said.

He added that several measures were taken after the area was hit by floods, including digging up the soil and placing 1,000 sacks of sandbags.

“The temporary measure is expected to reduce the impact in the event of a high tide phenomenon followed by heavy rain,” he said.

Meanwhile, the resident, Rosnah Md. Hamsudin, 55, hopes that the matter is taken seriously because the tire burst is the third time reported to have occurred this month.

“Residents are now always living in fear if there is heavy rain coupled with the phenomenon of high tides.

“The existing tires need to be upgraded immediately to avoid unwanted incidents including fatalities,” he said. – MESSENGER
