PUTRAJAYA: Health clinics across the country are advised to operate overtime in an effort to avoid overcrowding in hospitals.
Minister of Health, Dr. Zaliha Mustafa said, she suggested that the State Health Director re-examine the need for health clinics under their respective rotations to operate overtime.
He said, the move could divert customers or patients categorized as non-critical cases to be treated at the clinics and no longer at the Hospital Emergency Department (ED).
“In general, patients hope that the Ministry of Health (MOH) can resolve the issue of overcrowding and long waiting periods to get treatment at MoH hospitals and clinics.
“This congestion issue is detected in urban areas due to the growing population, as well as the tendency of customers to seek services at KKM hospitals and clinics,” he said when speaking at the 2023 KKM New Year’s Mandate Council here today.
He said, the 2019 Auditor General’s Report explained that the waiting period at the Hospital Emergency Department exceeded six hours.
In fact, he said, the situation occurred because 70 percent of the cases received were non-critical cases and it was at once contrary to the actual function of the Hospital Emergency Department which should only receive critical cases.
In the meantime, Dr. Zaliha said that the Hospital Director should ensure that the opening of new services is immediately implemented as soon as positions or human resources are approved.
To ensure the delivery of services at the hospital becomes more effective, Dr. Zaliha said the State Health Director was advised to align staffing and human resources.
“It can be done with work rotation, for example by placing officers from health clinics to hospitals.
“This measure can reduce the issue of working for too long at one time for an officer and can indirectly prevent or reduce the incidence of burn-out,” he said. – MESSENGER
