GE15: Reezal Merican lost in Kepala Batas

KEPALA BATAS: Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican accepted her defeat in the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).

According to him who previously served as Member of Parliament for the area for two terms, the residents of Kepala Batas have already exercised their democratic rights in electing their representatives who are not in favor of Barisan Nasional (BN).

“Today (yesterday) the people in Kepala Batas have already exercised their democratic rights in electing their representatives. Today I also accept with open arms, the results of the GE15 which are not in favor of Barisan Nasional in Kepala Batas.

“I would like to record my congratulations to YB Dr. Mastura (Siti Mastura Muhammad) on winning the Kepala Batas Parliament.

“I am sure YB Dr. Mastura was able to shoulder his responsibilities as a Member of Parliament well and was able to continue the people’s agendas that have been worked on as long as I was given the mandate as a Member of Parliament,” he said through a post on his Facebook social page last night.

In the meantime, Reezal Merican who is also the former Minister of Housing and Local Government thanked the voters for their support and the opportunity for him to serve representing Kepala Batas in the previous two terms.

“God willing, my service and the team for Kepala Batas will not stop just with the result of this GE15.

“I will also continue to `serve’ Kepala Batas in my new capacity because this is my soul for the sake of Kepala Batas,” he said.

The Kepala Batas Parliament was one of the biggest surprises in the GE15 results yesterday, where the seat considered safe by BN was successfully seized by Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate from Pas, Siti Mastura.

In the four-cornered clash in the seat, Mastura won with a majority of 2,867 votes after obtaining 28,604 votes compared to Reezal Merican with 25,737 votes while two other candidates namely Danial Abdul Majeed (PH) and Hamidi Abu Hassan (Pejuang) obtained 14,214 and 747 votes respectively. .

Reezal Merican’s defeat also saw BN lose the Kepala Batas parliamentary seat for the first time in 48 years since the parliamentary constituency was established in 1974. – UTUSAN
