Former Member of Parliament for Langkawi died in Germany

ALOR SETAR: Former Member of Parliament for Langkawi, Datuk Ir. Nawawi Ahmad, 61, died early this morning in Frankfurt, Germany.

The deceased who is also the UMNO Divisional Leader of Langkawi visited the country for work matters in his capacity as a Member of the Board of Directors of Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB).

Deputy Head of UMNO Langkawi Division, Nor Saidi Nanyan said, during the visit the deceased was also accompanied by his wife, Datin Shabariah Md. Hassan.

“Currently, I understand that the deceased’s son is on a flight to the country to take care of his father’s remains. I managed to call his wife and was informed that there was a possibility that the body was buried there. But the decision has not been finalized yet,” he said when contacted today.

The deceased has extensive experience in politics and has served for one term as a Member of Parliament for Langkawi from 2013 to 2018.

Prior to that he had served as a member of the Kuah State Assembly between 2004 and 2013.

He however lost to the former Prime Minister, Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad in the 14th General Election (GE14).

Following his defeat, he resigned as Chairman of Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) shortly after GE14 ended, having held the position since February 2014.

In the recent GE15, Nawawi’s name was not nominated after Barisan Nasional (BN) presented a new face, Datuk Armishah Siraj who is also the former Chief Private Secretary to the three Chief Ministers of Kedah. – MESSENGER
