KUALA NERUS: Flood victims in the state who are still in the process of reliving their lives after the flood are stressed by the increase in the price of chicken and vegetables in the market.
A flood victim, Wan Shukri Wan Omar, 49, claimed that the price of chicken reached RM11 yesterday, adding to the burden of the heads of households affected by the flood disaster.
He said, in addition to fresh chicken, the price of various types of vegetables also soared such as mustard, cucumber, soup leaves and pepper.
“It’s like falling down the stairs. After many electrical appliances and furniture were damaged due to floods, the price of raw materials went up which made me even more depressed.
“At the moment we need to save because we want to spend a lot of money on house repairs and children’s schooling,” he said when met here yesterday.
Meanwhile, a survey at Pasar Batu Enam here yesterday found that various raw materials, including fresh chicken, had doubled since last week.
In addition, the price of vegetables such as cucumber (RM6.50), large pepper (RM12), soup leaves (RM20) and mustard (RM6.80) also increased compared to last week.
A trader, Ahmad Sayuti Ghazali, 44, said that the price of fresh chicken has increased due to many livestock farms in the state and Kelantan being flooded.
According to him, the price went up between 60 sen and 80 sen compared to RM8.20 last week with an average supply of less than 200 head per day.
“Even though the supply was interrupted, the response from the public was quite good because many canteen operators took orders in preparation for the opening of the school session soon.
“It’s just that consumers are complaining that the price of fresh chicken and raw materials has gone up after they were hit by a severe flood, causing many to be forced to tie their stomachs,” he said. – MESSENGER
