PETALING JAYA: The president of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin confirmed that video assistant referees (VAR) will be introduced this year in the Malaysian League.
However, he said, the use of VAR was not comprehensive because it only involved important matches such as the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals of the FA Cup and Malaysia Cup.
“Actually, at our initial stage, I already discussed with the President of the Malaysian Football League (MFL), Datuk Ab Ghani Hassan, God willing we will make an announcement in the near future.
“VAR will start this year if everything goes well but, not for all matches. Maybe this year’s example is the quarter-finals, semi-finals and finals of the FA Cup and Malaysia Cup.
“We cannot start at the league level because of the cost involved and we have also sent referees to do this VAR training. So, please fans be patient and we will start this year,” he said.
He said this when met by reporters after winning the Sports Icon Leadership award at the Sports Icon Awards a while ago.
When asked about the cost of using the VAR, Hamidin said that his side would work with MFL to use the technology.
Previously, Tunku Mahkota Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim revealed that FAM and MFL agreed to implement VAR in the Malaysian League competition next season.
The matter was shared by TMJ in a tweet on the Twitter page yesterday immediately after the match between Malaysia and Thailand.
According to TMJ, the implementation of VAR has been agreed and will be implemented in the near future.
“FAM and MFL have agreed to use VAR in the near future. Some Malaysian referees have been sent to undergo training on how to use VAR. You can consult with the President of FAM, congratulations everyone,” said Tunku Ismail on Twitter. – UTASAN ONLINE
