Embolo was born in Cameroon, won with Switzerland

DOHA: Breel Embolo emerged as Switzerland’s hero when he scored the only goal as his side beat Cameroon 1-0 to start their Qatar 2022 World Cup campaign with a win.

However, in the action at the Al Janoub Stadium, Embolo chose not to celebrate his goal in the 48th minute to honor Cameroon, which is also his country of birth.

The victory allowed Switzerland to gain three valuable points in Group G, which also included the team chosen for this tournament, namely Brazil, in addition to Serbia.

Switzerland dominated the early stages of the first half with great pressure but, failed to overcome Cameroon’s defense which slowly grew in confidence and created their two best chances.

Cameroon also tried to counter-attack through Bryan Mbeumo, but his shot went slightly wide and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s attempt was saved by Swiss goalkeeper Yann Sommer.

The ball then bounced to the feet of Karl Toko-Ekambi but, the striker failed to complete the opportunity after simply kicking the ball high over the crossbar.

Soon after, Sommer again came to the rescue after denying Choupo-Moting’s close-range effort after the Bayern Munich striker broke through the Swiss defense and the score remained 0-0 until the end of the first half.

Three minutes into the second half, Switzerland took the lead through Embolo after Granit Xhaka started a move in midfield and passed the ball to Xherdan Shaqiri before heading in a cross.

The low cross found its way to the feet of an unguarded Embolo in the penalty area before the Cameroon-born player calmly slotted the ball past Andre Onana.

Onana, who is also the Inter Milan goalkeeper, deserves praise after he produced a brilliant save to thwart Ruben Vargas’ attempt to keep Cameroon from conceding for a second time.

The 1-0 result remained until the final whistle to ensure that Switzerland collected the first three points in the competition this time.

After this, Switzerland will face a tough task against Brazil while Cameroon will face Serbia.-AGENCIES
