Durian ‘balls’ compete with premium durians

JERANTUT: The ball durian grown by the farmers of Kampung Damak here will compete with the premium durian of other villages when it begins to attract the attention of fans of the king of fruit.

Since the village durian autumn at the beginning of this month, ball durian is now competing with other famous village or local breeds such as Damak King, Naga Emas, Mas Hijau, Aji Aziz, Seri Damak, Crocodile Skin, Elephant Head, Damak Copper and several other types the produce of farmers in the village.

Speak to Utusan MalaysiaKampung Damak durian seed entrepreneur, Ahmad Mustapha, 44, said that until now there are 20 balls of durian trees that some gardeners planted there about 40 years ago and this season, they bear nearly 2,500 seeds and are marketed at stalls near Jalan Jerantut -Benta, Kampung Damak.

“It is round, causing this type to become popular with the name ball durian when growers and buyers agreed to brand this shape.

“The texture of the filling is soft like ice cream, thick, delicious, sweet and the aroma is quite different from other village durians. There are five parts in a seed (fruit), while each part contains between three and four cloves. Sometimes a large comment is found in one share,” he said here yesterday.

Ahmad, who is also a durian wholesaler, said that the durian ball is estimated to weigh between one kilogram (kg) to three kg, while its girth is estimated to be between 50 and 80 centimeters.

Revealing the history of the origin of the fruit breed, he said, it is from durian clone D18 whose seeds were obtained and brought back by local growers from Penang and Johor.

“These seeds that are brought back then undergo the process of grafting buds or buds with other village breeds after this tree grows. There are a handful of growers planting D18 clone seeds and we do not deny that this fruit is from that breed,” he said.

His friend, Ramli Mustapha, 50, said that since they started producing the fruit a few seasons ago, durian balls are only known to most durian lovers in Kampung Damak.

“But now it is starting to be known to customers and outside fans who stop by and enjoy the contents,” he explained. – MESSENGER
