PETALING JAYA: Duopharma Biotech Berhad became the first pharmaceutical company to receive halal certification for oncology products awarded by the Malaysian Islamic Development Department (JAKIM).
The product is currently approved as an add-on treatment for postmenopausal women with early breast cancer as well as first-line treatment for postmenopausal women with advanced breast cancer.
Produced at Duopharma Biotech’s Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients Facility (HAPI) located in Glenmarie, Shah Alam, halal oncology products are supplied to both government and private healthcare hospitals in Malaysia and have recently been approved for export to Brunei and Singapore.
The Managing Director of Duopharma Biotech Group, Leonard Ariff Abdul Shatar said, the halal certification for oncology products produced at Duopharma Biotech’s HAPI Facility is in line with the group’s social and governance (ESG) commitment, where one of the main focus areas is access to medicine.
“We are making continuous efforts to provide consumers and patients with access to many necessary medicines and therapies that are guaranteed to be safe to use and effective, high quality, clean and halal.
“Our state-of-the-art HAPI facilities play an important role in the fight against many diseases, allowing us to embrace innovation and technology to meet patient needs and expand access to specialized therapies,” he said in a statement.
The HAPI facility is Malaysia’s first cancer drug manufacturing facility, kicking off the company’s venture into the oncology segment in 2019.
Now, the facility produces generic treatments for breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer and blood cancer.
It is also fully equipped to produce medicines to treat hormonal imbalances, cardiovascular, central nervous system and musculoskeletal conditions.
The facility has also received Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) Certification from the Malaysian National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA).
Commenting further, Leonard Ariff said, the company has been working to improve the position of Halal pharmaceuticals in the global pharmaceutical landscape, in collaboration with stakeholders around the world.
“We aspire to produce a holistic range of safe, effective, Halal-certified quality products to increase inclusiveness in healthcare, enabling all patients to have a choice in the therapies and medicines they need for their well-being.
“As the leader of Halal Pharmaceuticals in Malaysia, we practice the concept of halal toyyiban, adding another layer of assurance in addition to compliance with GMP standards,” he said. – MESSENGER
